EnterTech Learners

EnterTech training has three goals for learners: to be ready for entry-level positions in manufacturing, supply and service industries; to be equipped to solve work-related problems and add value to their workplace; and to continue improving their skills and education.

EnterTech learners are required to demonstrate proficiency in sixth-grade level math and reading. A variety of assessment instruments were reviewed for use in prerequisite assessment, such as the Adult Basic Learning Examination, the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System, the Texas Academic Achievement System (TAAS), and Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE). Agencies and organizations entering learners in EnterTech training should use these or similar assessment tools to assure a minimum level of competency.

In addition, learners need to express interest in the program and demonstrate motivation in completing the program and continuing their education and/or gaining employment.

A profile of general characteristics and needs that emerged during EnterTech's three year pilot program revealed that the majority of learners were single mothers (90%), ages 20 to 30 years in age (46%), having 1-2 children (74%) and recent work experience (70%). The most common barrier to employment was low basic skills. Although educational attainment ranged from less than high school to some college, for many the education experience consisted of repeated failures. This limited the employment possibilities to low paying, short-term jobs. Additional barriers included substance abuse, health limitations, depression, and chronically ill child. The most prevalent barriers were the lack of childcare and dependable transportation.
